EDSOC's Night of Class

In 2010 the Education and Social Work Society will be holding an end-of-year ball to be remembered! EDSOC's Night of Class will celebrate the end of the university year in style. Overlooking Sydney's spectacular Darling Harbour and with a two-course, sit-down meal, drnks and dancing, EDSOC's Night of Class is set to be the formal event of the year.

Tickets include:
• Two-course meal
• Free wine, beer, soft drinks and juice
• DJ and dancing

Tickets cost $75 for ACCESS card holders and $85 for non-Access card holders.

Tickets go on sale Monday, September 6 from the EDSOC office (Rm 406, Education A35) or online (email treasurer@edsoc.org.au). Tickets are strictly limited, so grab some friends and get in fast. Students from other faculties and other guests are very welcome!

EDSOC and the University of Sydney Union support the responsible service of alcohol. EDSOC's Night of Class is an 18+ event.

Due to the restricted number of tickets, refunds will not be available.


EDSOC's bi-annual Cardie Crawl

Friday 6th July; Week Two, Semester 2
Kicking off from 07.30pm at The Australian Hotel, 100 Cumberland St

Grab your friends and throw on your best professional (read: nerdy) garb and head down to The Rocks for a great night out with fellow EDSW students. Friends from other faculties very welcome!

Our first destination on our bi-annual cardie crawl through The Rocks (The Australian Hotel) will have a drinks and pizza tab for members of the society who arrive before the tab runs out.

The Cardie Crawl is a great EDSOC tradition and is the first big social event of Semester Two. Come along and meet new people, make new friends and make the most of your university experience!

EDSOC’s Cardie Crawl begins at 7.00pm at The Australian Hotel (100 Cumberland St) and will make its way through The Rocks district until the wee hours of the night.

EDSOC's third General Meeting for 2010

The Education and Social Work Society is holding a General Meeting (GM) on the 5th of August at 1 pm. The GM is a great opportunity for all Education and Social Work students to become more involved in the running of EDSOC - your faculty society. If you are new to the faculty don’t be shy; you don’t need to be an old-hand to have your voice heard or even to get elected to Executive!

Items on the agenda include:
• the election of members of the society to Executive positions and a publications subcomittee
• society events (inc. end-of-year ball, social and academic events)
• general business

Join The Education and Social Work Society on the Friday of week 13 for our end-of-semester major social event - the EDSOC Retro Cruise around Sydney Harbour. Students, staff, alumni and friends of the faculty are welcome, so grab your pals and come along!

Three hour cruise around Sydney Harbour with:
- Unlimited beer & wine
- Unlimited soft drink & juice
- 2 for $5 spirits
- Pizza dinner

Only $40 for Access card holders or $45 for non-Access card holders.

Tickets are available from the EDSOC office (Rm 406, Education Building A35). If you are unable to pay in person, you can arrange to pay by direct debit by contacting us at edsoc@edsoc.org.au.

First-year Social BBQ

Week Nine, Semester 1

First-year Education students are invited to a social BBQ during Week Nine of Semester One, run in conjunction with the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Social events like this one are a great opportunity to get to know some of the people you will be working with over the next few years of your degree.



Guest Lecturer: Melina Marchetta

The author of such acclaimed novels as Looking for Alibrandi, On the Jellicoe Road and Saving Francesca, Melina Marchetta is arguably one of Australia’s most influential writers of Young Adult (YA) fiction, having had an unmistakable impact on the state of Australian literature and on the youth of the nation.

Melina will be sharing her own story with students and staff of the faculty on Thursday, May 06, 1 pm in LT 351, Education Building (A35), and talking about her experiences as a writer and how her novels can be used in the classroom. Don’t miss your opportunity to hear from a truly inspirational writer of Australian YA fiction.








Guest Lecturer: Sir Laurence Street, AC, KCMG, QC

Thursday, 29 April, 1 pm - Assembly Hall, Old Teachers College

Coming from a background in law, where he achieved the respected title of Chief Justice, Sir Laurence Street is one of Australia’s foremost experts in conciliation and mediation.

As an alumni of The University of Sydney, Sir Laurence Street is eager to share his impressive life experiences with staff and students, and to discuss concepts in conflict resolution and mediation. Sir Laurence will also endeavour to apply the techniques of conflict resolution he advocates to the field of bahaviour management in education and social work.








Guest Lecturer: Dr Nigel Bagnall, on teaching in international schools

Thursday, 22 April, 1 pm - LT 351, Education Building (A35)

In a multicultural society like Australia, and with an increased sense of globalisation, internationalism and fluidity of movement, it could easily be argued that the concerns of an international school are the concerns of any Australian school. Dr Nigel Bagnall has spent much of his career working and conducting research in and visiting hundreds of schools that partake in international approaches to education. Having recently written another
book on the subject — Education without borders: forty years of the International Baccalaureate, 1970 - 2010 — Dr Nigel Bagnall is keen to share his expertise with staff and students of the faculty.








Guest Lecturer: Tina Valassis

EDSOC is very proud to present Tina Valassis, an experienced teacher who is hoping to share her first-hand knowledge of teaching with pre-service teachers at the University of Sydney (that means you!). As featured in the Inspirational Teachers series (first aired 2008, SBS), Tina Valassis is renowned for her captivating and truly engaging teaching style.

This service is provided free to all members of the Faculty of Education and Social Work by EDSOC, and is sure to be a truly rewarding experience.
